Chapter Twelve

Why couldn’t I be born into a loving home like the supernaturals around me? Braelynn wondered.

Apparently, the Goddess was all-powerful, yet she allowed Brae to be born to Angelica. Into a home filled with hatred, and a desire for power so strong that it drove her mother to Dark magic. Why would a deity such as the Goddess allow one of their subject’s access to such destructive power?

Angelica’s actions had far-reaching effects. It wasn’t just her own life, and that of Braelynn’s, that was ruined. Her mother created a drug that was destroying thousands of lives, both human and supernatural. None of it made any sense.

Now, Braelynn had failed the warriors, especially Evzen. And, she hoped to do just the opposite. She didn’t know much about her mother’s operations, but she prayed she’d be useful and accepted into this group.

In her gut, she felt she belonged with them. In another life that might be possible. Aside from letting Evzen down, she hated that innocents were dying because of something her mother created.

Embarrassment washed through Braelynn over the fact she believed Sterling when he told her the drug was meant to heal sick and injured paranormals. How could she be so naive? If she could only locate Sterling for the Dark Warriors. Then, at least, she’d feel like she wasn’t a complete failure.

Unfortunately, what she knew about the male could fill a thimble. He didn’t have a mind of his own. Until her mother’s death, Sterling followed her like a lost puppy, and now he was trying to fill her shoes. It was incomprehensible that Brealynn didn’t see his true colors sooner.

He’d taken her several times to Scotland, which was why they were inside a house located near a portal to Khoth. They’d searched every city she’d been to and come up emptyhanded.

She thought about the book and jewels she discovered at her mother’s home in New Orleans. The Dark magic surrounding the items burned a hole through the leather bag Evzen purchased for her. Several times, she wanted to look through the book for clues, but she couldn’t. Evzen hadn’t left her side for more than a few minutes, so she hid it in her bedroom at his house. Not that she was complaining he hadn’t left her alone. She loved being near him.

Come clean and show him the damn book, she mentally scolded. It would ease her guilt to unload the burden. And, no matter what happened, his opinion of her couldn’t get much worse.

“What has you thinking so hard?” intruded a masculine timber.

Startled by Evzen’s voice, she looked up from her cup of coffee. “I’m just trying to remember everything I can about Sterling. I keep thinking I’ve missed some important detail that can help. Plus, I’m thinking about my future, and what I’m going to do with my life.”

Evzen clasped his hands on the table across from her. He had long, elegant fingers that she wanted to feel run across her flesh. Stop it, Brae. You might be related to the male, she admonished and shook off her inappropriate thoughts.
